Summer Field Education / Research Travel Award

Call for applications

Early Deadline: Friday, March 17th 2017

Late Deadline: Friday, May 5th 2017

The Pacific Basin Research Center is pleased to announce the call for applications for its annual student summer grant program.  The PBRC will provide a maximum of ten awards of up to $2,000 to help students build upon their campus-based education through varied global experiences during the summer months.

The travel award is intended to provide partial support for field-based educational experiences.  This may include undertaking traditional internships, attending conferences, conducting research, and taking part in field-based training programs with local host organizations.  We hope to support summer projects which have the potential to enrich student knowledge and perhaps make some small, humble contributions to local societies.  We are interested in supporting initiatives to take part in activities that speak to the core mission of the PBRC—to promote humanistic development in the Pacific Basin (widely defined).

Award recipients will be expected to write a brief report detailing their experiences for the PBRC website, newsletter, and perhaps SUA Today.

To apply, please send your resume and a 1-2 page overview of your prospective project (including rationale, timeframe, budget, and justification) to Kayo Yoshikawa, the PBRC Program Coordinator (  Please visit the PBRC website (, under Campus Programs) for suggestions and an overview of the project, including a list of projects from previous years.  If you have any questions, please contact Shane Barter, the PBRC’s Associate Director (

Given the varied timelines attached to potential student projects, we are considering applications on a rolling basis.  The first round of applications will close on 17 March, with the second and final deadline of 5 May.
